Dedicated Committees
To shape and maintain the quality and coherence of the University’s general education program, we have recommended creating a University-wide curriculum review committee—the General Education Curriculum Committee (GECC)—with content specialists that are made up of faculty and staff whose service commitments would include a multi-year role serving on this team.
They will review gen ed courses based on the model at Pitt. Since this is a new committee, a charter will need to be created with membership, terms, selection process, tasks, and bylaws.
Drafts are in progress for review by University Senate/Faculty Assembly in September 2026.
We have also recommend establishing a distinct, University-wide assessment committee—the General Education Assessment Committee (GEAC)—that will include representation from faculty, advisors, students, and staff, who serve on this team to coordinate and support assessment efforts across departments and campuses.
The new committees will not change the function or purpose of existing curricular committees at the school or campus level (e.g., DSAS Undergraduate Council, UPG Educational Policies and Programs Committee, etc.). Instead, new assessment tools or rubrics will be developed for use by existing curricular bodies across departments, schools, and campuses. Faculty will continue to work within established processes in their departments to propose course syllabi for consideration. As is already the case, proposed courses will then be reviewed by school- or campus-level curriculum committees. Syllabi approved by unit-level curricular committees and deans would then be shared with the University-wide curriculum committee for final review and approval.
