Awards and Funding

Each year, the Office of the Provost is pleased to recognize individuals and who demonstrate educational excellence in areas such as mentoring, student success, and innovation in education.

The office also provides funding in support of new projects that promote high-quality research, scholarship, and creative endeavors and supports the annual Chancellor's Distinguished Awards.

While most of these programs focus on University of Pittsburgh faculty members, please note that the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Student Success is also open to Pitt staff and administrators.

Chancellor's Distinguished Awards

The annual Chancellor’s Distinguished Awards recognizes outstanding individuals whose outstanding public service contributions, scholarly accomplishments, and teaching excellence have advanced the Pitt community or their respective fields. Each recipient receives a letter from Chancellor Joan Gabel, a cash prize and grant to support their work, and is recognized during the annual Faculty Honors Convocation.

Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring

The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring recognizes individuals for their outstanding mentoring of graduate students seeking a research doctorate degree.

Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Student Success

Innovation in Education Awards

Each year, the Provost’s Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence invites proposals for its Innovation in Education Awards program recognizing University faculty for projects that aim to enhance teaching at Pitt and advance teaching models overall.

Open Educational Resource Grants

To support the development of open educational resources the Provost provides funding for projects that will enhance the educational experiences of Pitt students and provide these faculty with the ability to customize their course materials.

Pitt Momentum Funds

The Pitt Momentum Funds support high-quality research, scholarship, and creative endeavors at three distinct scales, including Priming (formerly Seeding), Teaming, and Scaling Grants. Awards are made across the breadth of interdisciplinary scholarship at the University, and all eligible faculty are encouraged to propose new, innovative ideas that can contribute meaningful insight, understanding, or solutions to societal challenges.
