Art on Campus
The University of Pittsburgh's public art initiative reflects a conviction that public art is essential to University life, transforming everyday spaces into places of discovery, reflection, dialogue, and joy.
The Initiative
The initiative is administered through its Public Art Committee, led by the Office of the Provost and the Office of Planning, Design and Construction, which takes a strategic and coordinated approach to public art on Pitt's campuses, overseeing both permanent and temporary works in public spaces such as lobbies, plazas, courtyards, and green spaces.
Areas in the committee's purview include:
- Recommending procedures, policies and criteria related to installation and display
- Reviewing and approving proposals for new installations and displays
- Providing guidance on the purchase, commissioning, and installation of works and acceptance of donated works
- Making recommendations for the maintenance and stewardship of existing works
- Auditing and cataloging the University's existing public art collection
The PAC brings together arts and humanities leaders, design and planning professionals, and communications specialists from across the University, including representatives from the Department of History of Art and Architecture, the Department of Studio Arts, the University Art Gallery, the University Library System, and the Graduate Student Government.

The Public Art on Campus website is the public home of the initiative and serves as a growing and evolving resource where visitors can browse photos and descriptions of works on display across campus.
