Michael Colaresi: Associate Vice Provost for Data Science

December 19, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Michael Colaresi, the William S. Dietrich II Professor of Political Science and the Research and Academic Director for the Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security, will step into a new role at the University. Effective January 1, he will serve as Associate Vice Provost for Data Science.

Mike brings a wealth of experience to this new position. While at Michigan State University Mike was the Director of the Social Science Data Analytics Initiative. Since arriving at the University of Pittsburgh in 2017, Mike has been working to elevate access to data science opportunities and training across our community. His efforts have included founding the interdisciplinary Pitt Disinformation Lab as well as co-creating a new integrated major in Computational Social Science. He was also a member of the Provost’s Data Science Task Force from 2019-2020.

In Mike’s capacity as the AVP for Data Science, he will create and oversee a structure that will convene, coordinate, and connect with University of Pittsburgh leadership to advance data science efforts at the University of Pittsburgh. This will include the development of a strategy to implement the goals and actions of the Data Science Task Force.

I am excited about the opportunities this new role affords the University in supporting student success. Please join me in congratulating Mike.

Best,
Ann
