Academic Regulation

Course Repeat

Last Revised: August 29, 2005

I. Scope

This document establishes regulations on course repeats. All schools and regional campuses are required to adhere to this regulation. Any exceptions to this regulation must be approved by the Office of the Provost and posted in the University Catalog.

II. Regulation

A student may repeat any course, except as noted below. No sequence course may be repeated for credit after a higher numbered course in that sequence has been passed with a C or higher grade (undergraduate) or B or higher grade (graduate).

No course may be repeated at any other institution and have that grade accepted as a replacement for a grade earned at the University of Pittsburgh.

The grade earned by repeating a course is used in GPA calculations in lieu of the grade previously earned. If the grade earned on the repeat attempt does not calculate into the GPA (e.g., W, R, N, or NC, etc.), the previous grade earned will continue to be calculated in the GPA. In addition, until an Incomplete is completed and replaced with a final grade, the grade earned in the most recent prior attempt will continue to be calculated in the GPA.

The following calculations apply to all students at the University of Pittsburgh:

  • The previous course and grade remain on the transcript and/or the academic record; however, the grade and credits previously earned are not calculated into the GPA.
  • No additional credit will be earned as a result of a course repeat if credits have already been earned for the course on a prior attempt.

Students may repeat a course no more than two times (three total attempts). All grades other than R or N will count as an attempt. At the discretion of the Dean's or Campus President's office, repeat attempts may require an academic improvement plan to be signed by the student.

The repeated course must be the same in which the previous grade was earned. In extenuating circumstances, a department chair, with the Dean's or Campus President’s approval, may substitute another course of similar content.
