In her new position as provost, Ann E. Cudd has her sights set on increasing Pitt’s overall diversity, filling interim positions and addressing gender pay gaps.
Cudd succeeded former provost Patricia Beeson as provost on Sept. 1 after serving as an administrator and professor of philosophy at Boston University.
The first Senate Council meeting for the fall 2018 semester was brief and lighthearted as University administrators and several representatives of shared governance groups provided attendees with reports and updates.
Chancellor Patrick Gallagher was the first to report. He introduced Provost Ann Cudd, who officially started earlier this month, and reviewed several other recent appointees.
“She's the only person I know who shows up on the first day, has a freshman convocation and moves into a house in the same day,” Gallagher said of Cudd. “So, it's pretty impressive.”
The Office of the Provost invites faculty proposals for small grants and development funding to support the creation or adaptation of Open Educational Resources (OER), high-quality curricular materials that are free to use and allow legal permission for open use and adaptation. Of particular interest are projects that involve either core courses or those with high enrollments.
For the Year of PittGlobal, the Office of the Provost aims to promote the University as a global convening point by highlighting groundbreaking research and worldwide partnerships.
New Pitt Provost Ann E. Cudd, speaking to the attendees at new faculty orientation, said in a Q&A period following her initial remarks that she’s “not really clear on what the need would be” for a Pitt faculty union.
Cudd — who admitted to being in Pittsburgh for just 36 hours before she addressed the crowd of more than 200 attendees, including 149 new faculty on Aug. 27 — said she’s still learning about the University’s demands.

After more than 30 years in higher education, Ann E. Cudd (A&S ’84G, ’86G, ’88G) has returned to her alma mater as the University of Pittsburgh’s provost and senior vice chancellor. Cudd most recently worked at Boston University as dean of its College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Cudd, whose appointment at Pitt began Sept.
