New Platform Helps Make the Most of a Large University

This summer, I was rushing through the airport in Lima, Peru, nervous about missing a flight, when I spotted someone in a crowd wearing a Pitt T-shirt.

It felt like a good sign. Had there been time, I would’ve said hello. Instead, while on the plane later, I marveled at how connected I felt to a stranger — without ever having exchanged words, thousands of miles from Pittsburgh — just knowing there was a chance that at some point in time, maybe we had both spent late nights studying in the Cathedral of Learning. 

Questions and Answers: Search for Health Sciences SVC, Dean of Med School

In January 2019, Chancellor Patrick Gallagher announced that Dr. Arthur S. Levine has decided to step down from his roles as senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the School of Medicine. Levine, who has worked at the University of Pittsburgh for more than 20 years, will remain in his current roles until a successor has been identified.

Pitt to match Pell Grants for undergraduates

The University of Pittsburgh announced a plan Friday to match Pell Grants for all eligible undergraduate students beginning in the fall.

The Pitt Success Pell Match Program will match the federal funds dollar for dollar, up to the cost of attendance for eligible students across all five of Pitt’s campuses in Oakland, Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville.

Administration Hopes Faculty Participation in COACHE Survey Increases

The 2019 COACHE survey for full-time faculty launched last week, and Laurie Kirsch, vice provost for faculty affairs, development and diversity, hopes Pitt meets or exceeds the 45 percent participation rate it set in 2016.

The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education has conducted the survey for more than 10 years, surveying faculty members at more than 250 colleges and universities to understand the themes associated with faculty satisfaction.

Panel Discussion on Open Education Resources Set for March 4

The Office of the Provost is hosting a panel discussion on open education resources from 4 to 5:30 p.m. March 4 in the Gold Room of the University Club.

This is an event organized by the OER committee, headed by the Assistant Provost Nancy Tannery. The purpose of the panel discussion is to let more faculty know about the benefit of using OER and how OER might be found and used.

Senate Council warned that 2019 could be a tough state budget year

University administrators told Senate Council members last week that they are examining Pitt’s severe weather policies and are expecting a tough year for the state budget.

The chancellor’s report for the Feb. 14 meeting was delivered by Provost Ann Cudd along with Senior Vice Chancellor for Community and Governmental Relations Paul Supowitz and Senior Vice Chancellor for Business and Operations Gregory Scott.
