University Updates

{Added 7/15/2020} Please visit coronavirus.pitt.edu for updates and information on a return to campus and resilience planning in response to COVID-19. You can also find the Resilience Framework & Operational Postures on this site.

{Added 3/16/2020}  Please visit www.emergency.pitt.edu for updates on the COVID-19 response. This website is the centralized and official source of information for all Pitt constituents. Faculty are encouraged to check this website frequently for updates.

{Added 3/16/2020}  At this time there are no plans to modify the end date of the spring semester nor change the start date of any of the summer sessions. As needed, flexibility will be granted to faculty in conveying final term grades, as well as to departments with respect to certification of graduation requirements.

Due to the week that has been devoted to transitioning to remote learning, the academic term—which is typically 15 weeks—has been shortened to 14 weeks of student effort. In accordance with the U.S. Department of Education Code 34 CFR § 668.3, the University has requested a temporary reduction in the length of the academic year. In anticipation of the Secretary granting this request, faculty are advised to construct their curriculum for the remainder of the semester with the aim of achieving their course's critical student learning outcomes via normal student effort over the remaining 5 weeks of the original academic year (inclusive of finals week).

Updates on Teaching

{Added 7/15/2020} Information about the Flex@Pitt instructional model is available on the University Center for Teaching and Learning website.

{Added 3/16/2020}  Information about instructional continuity and temporary remote teaching can be found on the Teaching Center webpage.  Visit often as material is updated on a frequent basis.

{Added 3/17/2020}  In order to facilitate the free exchange of ideas during lectures, if a faculty member intends to record their lecture with student participation, they must advise the students, via e-mail and at the beginning of the lecture, that the lecture, including their participation, is being recorded. Students should not be required to participate in the recorded conversation and should be encouraged to ask questions offline. Further, the recorded lecture may be used by the faculty member and the registered students only for internal class purposes and only during the term in which the course is being offered. Faculty who have questions should contact faculty@pitt.edu.

Updates from Provost Ann Cudd

{Added 3/16/2020}  Provost Ann Cudd frequently shares messages on COVID-19 response and planning specific to faculty, in addition to those to the Pitt community as a whole. Please check it often for the latest messages.

Updates on Faculty Events Sponsored by the Office of the Provost

{Added 5/8/2020}  After considering a variety of options for the ACC Academic Leaders Network (ALN) program for next year, the ALN steering committee has made the difficult decision to pause the Academic Leaders Network program for the 2020-2021 academic year due to the impacts of COVID-19.  Therefore we will not be soliciting nominations for Cohort 3 at this time. Visit the Academic Leadership Development webpage for detailed and updated information.

{Added 3/16/2020}  First Monday of the Month faculty development workshops are suspended for the rest of the spring term but will resume in the fall. Visit the Professional Development for Faculty webpage for updated information.

{Added 3/16/2020}  The second annual Women IN Academic Leadership (WIN-AL) program will not be held as planned on April 30, 2020. The leadership program will be held in the fall, and applications will be held until then. We will be in contact with current applicants. In addition, updated information will be posted on the Office of the Provost’s Academic Leadership Development website.
