Professional Licensure Disclosures

Federal regulations (34 CFR 668.14(b)(32)(ii), 34 CRF 668.43 (a)(5)(v) and (C) and NC-SARA policy 5.2.) require The University of Pittsburgh to publicly disclose to students whether each of our programs that lead to professional licensure or certification meet or do not meet the educational requirements of the state where the student enrolling is located. This disclosure applies to all program modalities, including in-person, online, or hybrid.

What is a "program leading to professional licensure or certification"?

A program leading to professional licensure or certification is an academic program that is designed, marketed, and/or advertised to meet the educational requirements

  • For a specific license or certification; and
  • The license or certification is required for employment in the occupation the program was designed to prepare students to enter

This disclosure does not include programs where a professional license or certification is not necessary for employment and programs that aren’t specifically designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure.

Does the program meet the educational requirements for licensure in my state?

Many programs at the University of Pittsburgh are intended to meet the education requirements to sit for licensure or certification in the state of Pennsylvania. Many of these programs may also meet educational requirements in states outside of Pennsylvania, including many of the University’s online/hybrid programs.

However, completion of any program by itself does not guarantee licensure or certification in any state or territory. Licensing requirements vary by state and are subject to change, as are other state laws or regulations that may impact licensure. Students should contact the licensing agency for the state or territory in which they intend to practice to confirm to the most current requirements before beginning an academic program.

Potential Changes to Requirements

The University of Pittsburgh makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification is current. However, state requirements may change at any time. Pitt urges all applicants to visit the board responsible for licensure or certification in any state in which they wish to obtain licensure or certification for the most current licensure or certification requirements.

A Note about Student Location

The University of Pittsburgh will determine a student’s location as it pertains to these regulations as outlined below:

In-person programs: Prospective students for in-person professional licensure programs will be considered to be located in PA.

Online/hybrid programs: Prospective students for online/hybrid professional licensure programs will be considered to be located in the state listed in the address used in their application. In the student information system, this is the address associated with home address.

Enrolled students

In-person programs: Enrolled students in in-person professional licensure programs are considered to be located in PA.

Online/hybrid programs: Enrolled students in online/hybrid professional licensure programs will be considered to be located in the state associated with their local address as reported to the University and entered into the student information system.

Relocation

Students who relocate during the program or plan to relocate to a different state for employment after the program are responsible for ensuring that their program meets the educational requirements for that state. Before considering relocation, students should check with their school and that state's relevant licensing authority to ensure that their program meets the requirements. Students must notify the university of their change of address if they relocate during the program.
