Dear Colleagues,
Pitt Digital will make Claude for Education available to faculty/staff this week and students over winter break as part of our Generative AI @ Pitt offerings. We will send a joint announcement to each group with instructions for getting started, links to training and support resources, and guidance on responsible AI use.
Claude for Education is an advanced conversational AI assistant with enhanced privacy built by Anthropic. Claude assists with writing, research, document analysis, and complex problem-solving — helping draft communications, analyze large documents, brainstorm ideas, and work through multi-step problems.
This initiative represents one element of the University's broader strategy to position Pitt at the forefront of applied AI while preparing students to utilize AI effectively in their careers. Grounded in dialogue with faculty governance bodies, the announcement of this first step in supporting the use of AI in academic settings advances the Plan for Pitt commitment to fostering innovation in ways that align with our academic values and standards. As our strategy expands, we remain committed to continuing an even more robust collaboration through shared governance as AI tools and their applications evolve. Students will receive access over winter break.
We welcome your input and questions regarding this exciting new initiative. Thank you for your continued support.
Warm regards,
Joseph J. McCarthy
