Notice of Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse — Joint Message with Office of Human Resources

September 8, 2025

Note: This notice has been sent to all University employees

The University is committed to ensuring the safety of children on its campuses. All University employees are obligated to report suspected abuse of a child under University Policy, whether it be serious bodily injury, sexual abuse, serious mental injury, serious physical neglect, or human trafficking. You must make a report to both ChildLine and the University of Pittsburgh Police Department.

* Please note: Reporting child abuse to the Pitt Concern Connection does not fulfill the requirements of mandatory reporting under Pennsylvania law.

Retaliation is strictly prohibited against anyone who makes a good faith report of suspected child abuse or who participates in a related investigation. More information on reporting child abuse is available on Pennsylvania’s Keep Kids Safe site.

Training on Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse is available for all University employees through the Child Welfare Resource Center at no cost. Additional requirements exist for employees and individuals who have direct contact with children as part of their University position, or hold a position as part of a camp, program, activity or service involving children hosted by or at the University. These requirements include Child Protection Clearances, as required by state law, and mandated training. Clearances must be renewed and clearances retaken every five years.

If you have any questions about your obligation to report suspected child abuse, or questions regarding Child Protection Clearances, camps and programs involving children, or mandated reporter training, please submit an online inquiry, selecting “Human Resources” under the Service Area dropdown menu, and then selecting “Child Protection Clearances” under the I Need Help with… dropdown menu.
