I. SCOPE

This policy establishes recognition of minors and areas of concentration at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

II. POLICY

Minors

The University recognizes minors as an educational experience which results in attainment in and knowledge of a particular discipline and which is a requirement of or an option in attaining a degree with a major in a different discipline. Minors are
separately defined for undergraduate and graduate levels.

The requirements for earning a minor are determined by the faculty teaching the minor, subject to review and approval by the Academic Dean, the Provost, and the Senior Vice Chancellor for the Health Sciences, if proposed by a unit in the Health Sciences.

A graduate or undergraduate minor offered by the faculty on a particular campus is available to any student enrolled in an academic degree program offered on the campus provided that the school from which the student is graduating recognizes this minor and the student or degree is at the same level as the minor. The completed minor is entered on the academic record and appears on the official transcript when the degree is awarded. Double or triple minors may appear on the transcript of a student who meets the requirements of two or three distinct minors.

Areas of Concentration

An area of concentration is an educational experience which results in concentrated training in or knowledge of a particular area within the discipline of a degree program and which is part of a degree.

An area of concentration and its requirements are determined by the faculty teaching in the degree program associated with the area of concentration, subject to review and approval by the Academic Dean, the Provost, and the Senior Vice Chancellor for
the Health Sciences, if proposed by a unit in the Health Sciences.

For each degree at most two areas of concentration can be pursued. An area of concentration which is specified for a particular degree program can be posted to the academic record and the official transcript of only those students completing the
degree program.
