Religious Observances Guidelines and Support

November, 6, 2019

Dear graduate and professional students,

As your Dean of Students, it is important to me that your faith and religious observances are fully supported at the University of Pittsburgh. Consistent with our commitment to diversity and inclusion, the University has a tradition of recognizing religious holidays that members of the community may observe. At the beginning of each academic year, the Provost advises faculty that students shall not be penalized for absences resulting from religious observances that conflict with a University activity.

Please contact your faculty instructors as soon as possible, but no later than 3 weeks prior to a conflict, in order to allow for adequate accommodations. Faculty are expected to make a reasonable effort to reach mutually agreeable arrangements. If you experience any issues with your request to faculty, please reach out directly to your School’s Dean’s Office.

Please also remember that if you are the instructor of a course, you are responsible for arranging adequate accommodations for students who notify you of a conflict due to a religious observance. Undergraduate students have been sent a similar email outlining the University’s guidelines and support.

Sincerely,

Kenyon R. Bonner, EdD
Vice Provost and Dean of Students
