Message from the Provost: Flex@Pitt in the Guarded Risk Posture

October 13, 2020

Dear Pitt Faculty and Students,

As we move toward our shift to the Guarded Risk posture on Monday, Oct. 19, I wanted to share some thoughts and resources about Flex@Pitt.

As you know, the Flex@Pitt model allows us to offer in-person learning for our students when conditions allow for it and provides faculty with tools and support to deliver robust teaching remotely when necessary. Flex @ Pitt also accommodates faculty and students whose personal health risk or circumstances prevent them from coming to the classroom, even with the very rigorous health and safety measures we have in place.

Flex @ Pitt—and all of our academic and operations planning—is underpinned by Pitt’s operational postures and health rules and is designed to adapt to changing conditions of the virus and our campuses.

Moving to the Guarded Risk posture we are able to explore all of the possibilities—flexibilities, really—that the Flex @ Pitt model offers. This upcoming change of posture means that we will be able to more fully implement it. It is exciting to think about how we can use this model to enhance the educational experience of our students.

For more on Flex @ Pitt operations, the University Center for Teaching and Learning has created the Flex@Pitt Teaching Support Playbook which contains invaluable information and guidance. The center also has a robust selection of workshops on Flex@Pitt technology and so many other valuable topics relevant to teaching and learning.

Students, please visit Student Success with Flex@Pitt for more information and strategies for success.

Additionally, this Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m., I am really looking forward to moderating a panel discussion with faculty members on "Flex @ Pitt: Teaching across Postures." We will spend the hour exploring just some of the pedagogical approaches, technologies and modifications currently in use at Pitt. I hope you can watch. We will also be recording the discussion so that it can be viewed after the event.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts and resilience as we face the challenges of this term together.

Hail to Pitt!

Ann E. Cudd
Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor
