Office of the Provost

Memorandum

December 10, 2010

Dear Colleagues:

Dr. Samuel D. Conte, University Registrar, informed me early in my term as Provost that he wished to retire from his position. After some discussion, he has agreed that he will stay for the near term to work from the Provost’s Office on the critically important Middle States Accreditation Report and other ongoing projects. Ralph Hertel will assume the position of Interim University Registrar.

Dr. Conte has served the University of Pittsburgh with devotion for more than forty years. Sam earned his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, where he has taught as an adjunct assistant professor in their Administrative and Policy Studies program. Before being named the University Registrar, Sam worked for the University’s Housing Office, Management Services, and Student Business Services. He was the project team leader for Pitt’s implementation of the new student information system and recently led the effort to implement additional features of that system on all of Pitt’s campuses. I am very grateful that he has agreed to stay long enough to apply those project and leadership skills to our Middle States report.

Sam’s dedication to the University has consistently benefited many of us during his decades of service. Please join me in wishing Sam well as he looks forward to his plans for retirement.

Sincerely,

Patricia E. Beeson
