Announcing Interprofessional Center for Health Careers

September 10, 2018

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the creation of the Interprofessional Center for Health Careers. The center will be one of the first of its kind devoted to undergraduate health and pre-health interprofessional education, establishing a preeminent educational and advising infrastructure to support students interested in health sciences fields. We are delighted that Susan M. Meyer, Professor of Pharmacy and co-director of the Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, has agreed to serve as director of the new center. Susan's work in this educational space at Pitt is well known. Prior to serving in this new role, she has served as chair of the University's Working Group on Interprofessional Education and will continue to serve as co-director of Pitt's Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, as well as Associate Dean for Education in the School of Pharmacy.

The development of the center was prompted by a proposal from students who had identified the need to consolidate and expand pre-med and pre-health advising and advances our efforts to provide a more tailored and personalized approach to the student experience.

The creation of the center represents a new model for education and advising at the University of Pittsburgh. This innovation is as important as it is far-reaching, and we look forward to its positive impact on our students in the days and years ahead.

The Interprofessional Center for Health Careers will engage in robust education, programming, mentoring, and advising. It will provide students with opportunities to explore careers in health, health care, and biomedical sciences; learn how different health care professions work together; and make informed career choices based on understandings of the evolving health care delivery system, the roles professionals play, and the importance of teamwork in patient care.

The center will partner with the Health Sciences Schools, Student Affairs, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, the Coalition for Pre-Health Students, and Pitt Commons/Health Links—an online program that facilitates virtual mentoring across the University community.

The center will be located, short-term, in the trailer behind Ruskin Hall and will move to permanent offices in Langley Hall once renovations there are complete.

Sincerely,

Patricia E. Beeson               Ann E. Cudd
