Sexual Assault Research Climate Survey (March 30, 2015)

Subject line: Important Message from Provost Beeson

Dear University of Pittsburgh Student,

Sexual violence has no place in our university. As you know, Chancellor Gallagher has stated his commitment to maintaining a campus environment where sexual violence is prevented and addressed, and I share his commitment.  An example of that commitment can be found in the fact that the University of Pittsburgh will soon participate in a national sexual assault research climate survey that will help us gain a better understanding of the climate at the University of Pittsburgh, and help inform our practices regarding sexual assault moving forward.

Westat, a well-known research organization, is administering the survey. Starting on April 2, you will receive an email directly from Westat ( inviting you to participate in the survey. The survey should take 20-30 minutes to complete. The survey asks very intimate questions, but your responses will be kept entirely anonymous.

I encourage you to take the time to complete this important survey. The more students we hear from, the better able we will be to ensure the safety of our undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at Pitt.

You can find additional information and resources online at our Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Education (“SHARE”) website at Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stephanie Hoogendoorn at

With best regards,

Patricia E. Beeson
Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor
