Nathan Urban

As Vice Provost, Dr. Urban has led efforts to personalize the student experience, chaired the successful search for the new dean of computing and information, and served as a valuable member of the provost’s office, serving on the distinguished faculty and honorary degree committees.

Nathan joined our faculty in 2015 after serving for many years on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, where he was the Frederick A. Schwertz Distinguished Professor of Life Sciences, head of the department of biological sciences, founding director of the BrainHub initiative, and interim provost. In addition to his current role as vice provost, at Pitt he is co-director of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, Associate Director of the Brain Institute, and professor and vice chair of the department of Neurobiology.
