Office of the Provost

Memorandum

May 25, 2010

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Steven Husted has accepted my offer to become the Interim Dean of the University Honors College, effective August 1, 2010. While he serves as Interim Dean, the search for a new Dean will take place under the aegis of the new Provost.

Dr. Husted is a Professor of Economics in the University’s School of Arts & Sciences, and, from 1999-2005, was the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research for the School. He has held visiting fellow positions at the Australian National University, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Glasgow and has served as Senior Staff Economist for the Council of Economic Advisers in Washington, DC. He earned his baccalaureate degree from Michigan State University in Political Science, where he also earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in Economics.

Dr. Husted is a winner of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award at Pitt and has developed and taught Introduction to Macroeconomics for the University Honors College. He has experience in supervising the Honors College’s Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) degree and the Brackenridge Fellowship. He has recently been elected to the Honors College Advisory Board.

Dr. Husted’s current research projects include investigations of the rise of Chinese exports and the determinants of purchasing power parity in exchange rates. In addition to numerous other publications, Dr. Husted is the co-author of the International Economics, which is now in its 8th edition.

I have great confidence that Dr. Husted will provide sound leadership to the College and that his experience will help the University Honors College community continue to build on its well-recognized strengths and priorities during this transition time.

Sincerely,

James V. Maher
