Office of the Provost

Announcement

April 24, 2003

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Livingston Alexander has accepted my offer to become the next President of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, effective August 1, 2003. Dr. Alexander earned his AB in Philosophy (Classical Studies) from St. Joseph Seminary College in Washington, D.C., and his EdD in Educational Psychology from the University of Houston. He was a valued faculty member at Western Kentucky University, serving as Professor in the Department of Psychology before accepting the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Alexander has also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Troy State University in Montgomery, Alabama. Since 1998, he has been the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kean University in New Jersey.

During his distinguished academic and administrative career, Dr. Alexander has published numerous articles on teaching and learning in publications such as the Journal of Educational Psychology and Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development. He leads seminars on personal and interpersonal dimensions of leadership and diversity for the American Council on Education’s fellowship program and has served as chair of the New Jersey Council of Chief Academic Officers and as an elected member of the American Association of University Administrators’ Board of Directors.

As a senior administrator at several institutions of higher education, Dr. Alexander has established a record of noteworthy accomplishment. Most recently, as provost at Kean University, he has led the implementation of an innovative General Education program. His experience in senior academic administration, fund raising, and community relations make him the ideal president for our Bradford campus. Both Chancellor Nordenberg and I respect Dr. Alexander’s strong reputation for high integrity and his impressive strength in developing consensus while focusing on institutional priorities. Dr. Alexander is passionate in his commitment to the mission of the University of Pittsburgh and to Bradford’s important role within it.

Dr. Alexander has the vision, commitment, and experience to move the campus forward to an even higher level of attainment. I look forward to working with Dr. Alexander and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford community to ensure the continuing success of the campus under his capable leadership.

Sincerely,

James V. Maher
