University Council on Graduate Study Minutes Tuesday, November 14, 2023
The minutes from the September 2023 meeting were approved (25 in favor; 2 abstention).
Academic Planning Proposals
Proposal to Modify the Master of Science in Nursing ARCO Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
The School of Nursing proposed a modification to the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) to Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program to increase the credits from 58 (13 clinical credits and 45 didactic credits) to 65 (13 clinical credits and 52 didactic credits) to meet accreditation standards. The program will prepare students to practice as NNPs in neonatal intensive care units, newborn nurseries, and follow-up clinics; these practice locations have strong demand for high-quality NNPs in our region.
A motion was made and seconded to recommend to the Provost that the proposal be approved. Members present voted in favor of recommending approval to the Provost (28 in favor; 1 abstention).
Proposal to modify the Master of Science in PharmacoAnalytics
The School of Pharmacy proposed a modification to the Master of Science in PharmacoAnalytics- Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research to include a non-thesis track and a hybrid option along with the 100% online option. The non-thesis option will provide flexibility by allowing a broad range of individuals to pursue advanced education without the traditional constraints of a research-based thesis. The hybrid option of the curriculum allows students to occasionally meet in-person for an immersive and collaborative experience. This will foster communication skills, teamwork capabilities, and create an engaging learning environment which can enhance the experience of a predominately remote curriculum. The degree offers healthcare professionals an opportunity to bring data science to the real-world databases with an emphasis on using analytical tools in pharmacy databases and applications.
A motion was made and seconded to recommend to the Provost that the proposal be approved. Members present voted in favor of recommending approval to the Provost (28 in favor; 3 abstentions).
Review of Academic Policy and Regulation
Proposal to modify the Registrar Grading Regulations Policy.
The Office of the University Registrar proposed a modification to the regulation for a student to register for and complete an audit of a class at the graduate and professional level in line with the existing regulation for undergraduate students that includes:
- Updated language to align audit registration and grading of class audits between undergraduate, graduate, and first-professional levels. (The removal of the section on Grade Option/Audit Requests for Graduate Courses appears as a tracked deletion in the draft for purposes of emphasizing the deleted language.)
- Consolidated overlapping sections from Grading Options and Grading System regulations and updated both terminology and format to improve clarity and ease of use while maintaining the previously understood intent and meaning of the two regulations.
A motion was made and seconded to recommend to the Provost that the proposal be approved. Members present voted in favor of recommending approval to the Provost (26 in favor; 1 abstention).
Proposal to modify the posthumous degree “process and procedure” revision to UCGS and PACUP for approval as a Provost-area academic policy/procedure.
The Office of the Provost proposed to modify the Awarding of Posthumous Degrees Process and Procedure so that a dean or regional campus president should send a request for a posthumous degree or certificate of achievement to the Office of the Provost, which must approve the request. The Office of the Provost will coordinate with Student Affairs. The dean/president must affirm the approval of the department chair or program director of the student’s major. The student must have been in “active” status at the time of death and a copy of the student’s academic record should be included in the recommendation. A Certificate of Achievement may be awarded if a student does not qualify for a posthumous degree. The revision includes clarification for the criteria of a posthumous degree for undergraduate and graduate students, and the award process for the University Registrar.
A motion was made and seconded to recommend to the Provost that the proposal be approved. Members present voted in favor of recommending approval to the Provost (29 in favor).
