Introduction to Faculty Mentoring Resources
During the 2006–2007 academic year, the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Women’s Concerns (PACWC) convened a Mentoring Subcommittee to address the issue of faculty mentoring. They began with two initiatives. The first, based on the Fall 2006 University Senate’s Plenary Session “Fostering Mentoring for Sustaining Organizational Vitality,” was a series of faculty-led workshops of mentoring that were conducted throughout the academic year.
The second was a pilot mentoring program called “Pitt Partners”. Four groups, each consisting of five junior faculty members, were linked with senior mentors from across the university to provide a mentoring experience that was distinct from the type of mentoring that typically occurs in academic units. The main goals of the Pitt Partners program were to:
- Increase organizational knowledge
- Enhance positive work relationship with the University
- Develop support networks and build community across the University.
Inspired by the success of the Pitt Partners Program, the Mentoring Subcommittee’s charge for 2007 – 2009 was to develop a Faculty Mentoring Resource Web site. The goal was to identify resources that departments and programs from across the University could use for mentoring junior faculty. (See an example of a mentoring program implemented in the School of Nursing.) Although the importance of mentoring students, post-docs, staff and associate-level faculty was acknowledged, PACWC decided initially to focus on junior faculty. This Web site, which remains a work in progress, is the result of the Subcommittee’s work.
Basic information about mentoring is included to clarify potential misconceptions about mentoring and to guide faculty as they develop mentoring relationships. Examples of ongoing mentoring programs at the University of Pittsburgh provide specific examples of successful mentoring relationships on campus. Finally, links to mentoring resources developed elsewhere were added to provide depth and breadth to the topics presented.
