Assistant Provost Sheila Wells Rathke is stimulated by her work at the core of the University—with the Schools. “The intellectual environment here is fully alive and motivating and I find that, along with other members of the Pitt community, I am frequently exposed to powerful ideas that have the potential to transform lives. It is truly invigorating to be a part of an environment that provides knowledge, understanding, and innovation and to do my part to help bring focus to the goals and aspirations of these central academic units.”
Assistant Provost Rathke is responsible for helping individual Schools of the University to clarify their goals and strategies, analyze internal and external environmental forces, assess the needs of key constituencies, and turn their strategies into actions. Important parts of this process include helping to identify what is unique about programs or Schools and determining the profiles and values of the key partners that Schools will need to attract—including faculty, students, and corporate partners—to ensure academic success. Finally, she helps the Schools to define and articulate their strategic messages and to identify the most effective means of communicating with their various constituencies.
