Office of the Provost
Provost James V. Maher has spent his academic life identifying the regularities of disorderly systems: first as a physicist exploring chaos theory and, more recently, as the chief academic officer of the University of Pittsburgh. “The work here,” he says, “is always challenging.” Much of that work involves identifying university goals and then organizing resources toward reaching those goals.
As provost and senior vice chancellor of the university, Maher is the chief academic officer of the university. He works closely with Chancellor Mark Nordenberg and other members of the university’s leadership team to initiate and promote the university’s commitment to excellence in education and research and to strong partnerships in community development, while securing an adequate resource base and ensuring the university’s operational effectiveness. Maher recently established the Technology Commercialization Alliance (TCA) to make the technology transfer process of moving ideas from lab to market easier for faculty by marshaling internal resources such as market research, business planning and prototype development, mentoring and networking opportunities.
