Teaching
and research are at the heart of faculty life. The
Middle States Commission on Higher Education applauded the University’s
faculty for its strong “teaching ethos,” and the University is
home to faculty who are nationally recognized for the quality of their
teaching and mentoring such as Graham Hatfull (Biological Sciences) who is
one of only 20 professors, nationwide, to have won the million-dollar Howard
Hughes Medical Institute’s grant for outstanding teaching. Research
is the foundation of a successful learning environment for faculty and
students. In federally-sponsored and foundation-supported research, Pitt
ranks near the top nationally with over half a
