Memorandum
Dear Colleagues:
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. David DeJong, Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics, has accepted my offer to become the University of Pittsburgh’s Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Resources Management, effective September 1, 2010.
Dr. DeJong earned his bachelor of arts degree in economics, summa cum laude, at Central College in Iowa and his doctorate in economics at the University of Iowa. In 1989, Dr. DeJong joined the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant professor in the Department of Economics; he was promoted to professor in 2001. He has served as Visiting Professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna; DiTella University in Buenos Aires; and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, in Kiel, Germany.
Dr. DeJong’s research focuses on macroeconomics, econometrics, and transition economics. He has published widely in the top general interest journals in economics as well as the leading field journals; his book, Structural Macroeconomics, was published by Princeton University Press. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research.
In addition to his scholarly and instructional activities, Dr. DeJong has a strong record of University service as a member of or representative to such key committees as the University Planning and Budgeting Committee’s Parameters Sub-Committee, the Advisory Committee for the Admission of Student Athletes, and the Budget Committee of the Board of Trustees. He has served as Chair of the Department of Economics in the School of Arts & Sciences since 2006.
Dr. DeJong shares my strong commitment to the value of academic planning within the University and the effective integration of that planning with strategic use of our resources. I am looking forward to his important contributions to our senior staff team.
