Office of the Provost

Announcement

May 9, 2005

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Kathy W. Humphrey has accepted my offer to become Vice Provost and Dean of Students, effective July 1, 2005. Dr. Humphrey earned her bachelor's degree in education at Central Missouri State University and her master of arts in higher education administration at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She earned her PhD in Higher Education Administration from Saint Louis University. She is currently the Vice President for Student Development at Saint Louis University, a position she has held for almost five years. Previously at Saint Louis University, she was the Associate Vice Provost for Student Development and the Director of Residence Life. She is a widely regarded consultant and keynote speaker.

As Vice President for Student Development, Dr. Humphrey served as the chief student affairs officer on the Saint Louis University President’s Coordinating Council, developed living and learning housing options, increased occasions for students to positively interact with others in the university community, and initiated First Year and Sophomore Year Experience programs. Many of her activities involved creating seamless learning opportunities for students.

I have great confidence that Dr. Humphrey will provide the energy and leadership needed to strengthen the many vital connections between student and academic life. She shares my vision of an undergraduate education that addresses the needs of the whole student, so that our students strengthen their communications skills, their sense of motivation and sense of responsibility, and their sense of self. It is our goal that our students will become, more than ever, perceptive, reflective, contributing individuals within a diverse community of faculty, staff, administrators, and fellow students.

I look forward to working with Dr. Humphrey as she and the staff of Student Affairs and the Office of the Provost continue to define the development of an ever-stronger undergraduate education for students at the University of Pittsburgh. I am confident that her efforts as Vice Provost and Dean of Students will assist the University in reaching its goal of educating the whole student.

Sincerely,

James V. Maher
